Kindergarten/first grade special education classes meet for six hours a day, five days a week, including a six week summer session. Special education objectives for the children are determined in all areas of child development, and are applied through a series of interventions, such as playtime, individual task time, and regular classroom activities. Individual goals guide children to become increasingly independent, and enable them to attend a more inclusive environment in their local school.
The curriculum is academically oriented, focusing on reading, writing, and math skills. Computer and music classes, outdoor play and adaptive physical education are also part of the child's activities. As in all special education programs, a team will oversee the child's education. Referrals and Individual Education Plans (IEP) are set by the child's local school district Committee on Special Education (CSE).
